About

Alice is an independent publishing platform that emerged from the editors’ shared interest in psychoanalytic poetry. Alice is not a strictly thematic journal or about the analytic discipline as such, but we do aim to publish writing with some legible connection to unconscious life.

The name for the magazine is modeled after the psychoanalytic case study in which a pseudonym conceals the identity of a person whose crisis has been exposed for the sake of research. Alice is our Dora, our Anna O., and our Little Hans. Alice is also a nod to Lewis Carroll’s muse and to Alice Notley’s idea that good poetry fails to deliver the sense of affirmation so many readers expect to receive from literature.

As a magazine, we believe poetry and the unconscious share an instinct for disobedience. We are interested in poems that follow the logic of madness: poems that confront what they inherit, but refuse to leave it intact. We believe the sick know how to tell the truth and the healthy are dirty liars.

Poetry is a sick art thus a magnificent depiction of agency.
